Which Password Manager Is Best?

As you may remember, I have had it up to HERE with LastPass after they totally botched the communication around their latest breach (and the fact that I have to qualify that it’s their “latest” breach is not a good sign either).

The Best Password Manager Recommendations

To pick a new password manager, I asked my nerdy community (that’s YOU!). Here’s a compilation of your recommendations and why.

Spoiler Alert: I’m switching to 1Password.

Here’s why:

  • 1Password is consistently in the top five recommended password manager lists, and it’s frequently #1.
  • 1Password is all in on a passwordless future with passkeys.
  • I have great respect for one of their Board of Advisors: Troy Hunt, the nerd behind the password-checking site called HaveIBeenPwned.
  • All these tools are going to do just about the same thing, so it really doesn’t matter a whole lot. I just need to pick one and go.

You Can’t Go Wrong with Any of These Options

If you want a free password manager, Bitwarden (below) is the answer. But other than that, any of these tools are highly rated and passionately recommended.

  • Thank you Beth for all that you do for us to keep us informed. Today I changed over to 1Password from Ladtpass. I too have used them for years. I was very happy how easy the transfer process was and I do have to admit it was a little scary pressing the Delete button on Lastpass. However, I feel that my 100+ passwords are much safer in the hands of 1Password. You are awesome and I thank you and the nerd herd for the great feedback on the best password manager to use. Joyce

  • Thank you for your research and recommendations. I’d like to recommend Kee Pass. I’ve been using KeePass for the last five years and I LOVE IT! My tech guys recommended it. It is easy to use and I can bounce between the mobile app and the desktop with ease. Thanks for all you do Beth!!

  • Hi Beth, I have made the switch from LastPass to 1Password. I like that they credit you a discount on the remaining subscription from your existing password manager (so I got a 50% discount off 1Password). I have been using a mix of Lastpass, iCloud and Google Chrome password managers which was getting very confusing. I like that 1Password provides a guide to how to import your passwords from all these applications and more! And that it is working across all my devices. Maybe LastPass did some of these but they weren’t well explained. The onboarding with 1Password has been very helpful. So far, so good! 1Password even auto-filled me logging back into your site! Thanks for the lead and your regular newsletters and advice. Chris.
