Who needs the paid version of ChatGPT?

Today I’ve been using Perplexity.ai to help me help you distinguish between the free and paid versions of ChatGPT and whether YOU need to pay the $20 a month for the upgrade. Here’s what Perplexity had to say.

Note: Microsoft’s Copilot tool (formerly Bing Chat) IS (more or less) the paid version of ChatGPT — and you can use it for free! It gives you some (not all) of the advanced features and also lets you create images with the updated DALL•E-3 tool.

Another Note: I GLADLY pay $20 a month for ChatGPT, but I need it to demo the new features, upload documents for it to analyze, create my own GPT tools, etc. A worrisome limitation in my world is that you can only do an X number of inquiries with the advanced side per X number of hours (they keep changing those limits, but it’s something like 40 chats per three hours). I’m always worried I’ll run out of inquiries during a demo in a session. And I also struggle with knowing what the basic version has to offer so that I can distinguish the differences for y’all. But it’s totally worth it.

Now on to Perplexity’s take on ChatGPT versions. Here’s the whole conversation straight from the site, but I copied/pasted the results below as well. The bigger headings were my actual questions.

What are the differences between the free and paid versions of ChatGPT?

ChatGPT offers both free and paid versions, with the paid version known as ChatGPT Plus. The free version provides basic access to the chatbot, while the paid version offers enhanced features and services.

The free version of ChatGPT is based on the GPT-3.5 architecture, which is the predecessor to the GPT-4 model available for Plus subscribers[2]. There are no specific usage limits to the free version of ChatGPT, so users can try out multiple conversations[2]. However, the free version may not provide access during peak times when the service is at capacity[1].

On the other hand, ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month, provides several advantages over the free version. These include:

  • General access even during peak times[1].
  • Faster response times[1][2][3].
  • Priority access to new features and improvements, including OpenAI’s latest updates such as GPT-4, ChatGPT plugins, the ability to create custom chatbots, and more[1][2].
  • Enhanced customer support[3].
  • More consistent and accurate responses, as the paid version has been fine-tuned and trained using a larger dataset[3].

It’s important to note that both the free and paid versions of ChatGPT are unable to access or process more recent data or events after a certain cut-off date[2].

Based on the differences between the two versions, who should sign up for the paid version?

For example, would the paid version benefit the average person at a large company? Or is it just good for certain professions?

The decision to sign up for the paid version of ChatGPT, known as ChatGPT Plus, should be based on the specific needs and usage patterns of the individual or organization. Here are some considerations for different types of users:

Large Companies and Professional Use for ChatGPT Plus

  • High Volume Usage: If a large company expects to use ChatGPT extensively, the paid version offers general access even during peak times, which can be crucial for maintaining workflow[1].
  • Demand for Speed: Companies that require quick interactions for tasks like customer service, content creation, or data analysis would benefit from the faster response times provided by ChatGPT Plus[1][3].
  • Access to Advanced Features: Organizations that can leverage new features such as GPT-4, plugins, and custom chatbot creation will find the paid version advantageous[1][2].
  • Customer Support: Enhanced customer support included in ChatGPT Plus can be valuable for businesses that rely on consistent service[3].

Specific Professions for ChatGPT Plus

  • Content Creators: For those in content creation, marketing, or advertising, the ability to generate personalized marketing messages and content quickly can be a significant advantage[3][4].
  • Developers and Engineers: Professionals who need programming help or advanced data analysis tools will benefit from the extended capabilities of the paid version[2][3].
  • Educators and Trainers: ChatGPT Plus can be used to automate aspects of education and training, providing personalized learning experiences[3].

General Considerations for ChatGPT Plus

  • Budget: At $20 per user per month, businesses and individuals should consider whether the benefits align with their budget[2].
  • Data Security: Companies concerned with data security may find reassurance in the enterprise-level offerings that come with paid plans[2].
  • Trial and Evaluation: It may be worth trying ChatGPT Plus for a month to assess its value for your specific use case[9].

In summary, ChatGPT Plus is likely to benefit professionals and organizations that require reliable, high-speed access to advanced AI features and have the budget to support the subscription cost. It is particularly useful for those in roles that involve heavy use of conversational AI for tasks such as customer support, content generation, and data analysis. However, for casual users or those with minimal requirements, the free version may suffice.
