Today I was writing a blog post about award-winning sites and tools that use AI and technology for good. And I got way of track, which lead to an amazing rabbit hole, a new app, new nerd skills and a warm/fuzzy feeling that is keeping a smile on my face.

First I found a broken charity site

Petsmart Charities created Rescue Writer, a simple site that lets pet adoption charities use AI to create compelling stories and animal bios to attract adopters.

Logo for "Rescue Writer" with red text and a blue speech bubble containing white ellipses, reminiscent of playful puppies communicating.

Great idea, right? Except the site doesn’t work. I tried it about 20 times on different browsers and with various configurations. It worked maybe one time, but most of the time I got this:

A red speech bubble with the words "try again" is looped by a blue ring. Below, the text reads, "Apologies, we had trouble fetching your story." It's like trying to herd kittens—sometimes things just don't go as planned.

Even though it won all kinds of awards, I didn’t want to send y’all to a broken site. So I searched for a similar tool and came up empty.

So I decided to make my own

I’ve written before about the GPT Marketplace, a collection of (probably) tens of thousands of GPTs that do specific things. And if you have the pro version of ChatGPT, you can make your own.

So of course I had the brilliant idea of throwing together a quick replica of Rescue Writer’s functionality. It took longer than I thought it would (what doesn’t, right?), but in about 70 minutes I created a tool that lets you upload a picture of a pet, put in a few details and push a button for a cute pet bio that is sure to attract the attention of future adopters.

How to Create Your Own GPT

D’oh! I was going to write out the steps I took to create this Custom GPT, but it’s already 2pm Eastern, and I have to get Friday NerdWords out (the newsletter) before it’s no longer Friday!

So stay tuned. I’ll follow up with step-by-step instructions or maybe even a free webinar to teach you how to make your own.

  • I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets sidetracked – glad you found a broken site and maybe you can get them as a client now that you found it!!!

    • My mind is racing about the possibilities for this tool for shelters. And I’d like to see it on a nice website as well. Stay tuned!
