Fix This: Emergency Contact Info

Imagine this: You are unconscious, and a kind stranger finds you. Help that person to help you by setting up your emergency contact info now. The steps are different on different phone platforms, but here’s where to start.

iPhone Emergency Contact Instructions

This is straight from the Apple help page.

1. Open the Health app , then tap your profile picture.
2. Tap Medical ID.
3. Scroll to Emergency Contacts, then tap Edit.
4. Add or delete a contact.
   • Add a contact: Tap the Add button to add an emergency contact (You can’t set emergency services as an SOS contact).
   • Delete a contact: Tap the Delete button next to the contact you want to delete, then tap Delete.
5. Tap Done to save your changes.

Android Emergency Contact Instructions

Android devices vary by the model, but the Personal Safety app that usually comes with the phone is a good place to start. Google’s help pages offer these instructions.

1. On your phone, open the Safety app .
2. Sign in to your Google Account.
3. Tap Your info.
4. Add your emergency info.
   • For Medical information:
     • Tap Medical information > To add info like blood type, allergies, or medications, tap the item in the list you want to update.
   • For Emergency contacts:
     • Tap Emergency contacts  Add contact and choose the existing contact you want to add.
5. To show your emergency info when your screen is locked, tap Emergency info access  Show when locked.

BONUS TIP: Even if an old phone no longer has a service plan, you can still use it to call 911. As long as it has bars, 911 will work!

Call 911 on iPhone

Press and Hold: Press and hold the side button and any volume button until the Emergency SOS slider appears, then drag the slider to start the call.
Five Press Method: Go to Settings > Emergency SOS, then enable “Call with 5 Presses”. Then, quickly press the side button five times.
Emergency Dialler: You can also access the emergency dialler by pressing the power button to turn off the screen, then press and hold the power button until the screen turns on, swipe up, tap “Emergency,” dial 911, and then tap the green call button.

Power Button Press: Press the power button quickly five times. Depending on your phone’s settings, you may need to touch and hold the red circle that appears or wait for a countdown before the call initiates.
