Five Little Things that Bring Great Joy

We live in a time of BIG tech tools, so it’s easy to forget about little tech tricks that make our lives easier.

Here are five little tech tips that make me happy:

Hold Down the Space Bar on Your Phone

If you’ve ever felt like a fat-fingered drunk person when trying to get your phone’s cursor to the right place, this tip is for you.

Hold down the space bar on your keyboard to turn your phone into a touchpad so you can put that dang little stick where you want it.

Forward Your Travel Plans to TripIt

This is an old-ie but a wonderful-ie. Sign up for a free account with TripIt, and forward all your travel confirmations to plans@tripit.com. Your plans are automatically grouped into an itinerary you can flip through on the go. For $50 a year, you get the Pro version, which will ping you if your airfare price goes down. TripIt Pro has more than paid for itself every single year in airfare refunds.

Enable Dictation on Your Computer

I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten really addicted to using voice to dictate my texts instead of typing. And I love having the same capabilities on my computer.

To enable dictation, you’ll have to go into your settings on a PC or Mac. I set up a shortcut to simply press my function key twice. Not only does it speed things up, but dictating my emails is easier than typing with one hand when my cat insists that I hold her while I’m working.

Get Rideshare Pricing from Apple Maps

When you use Apple Maps on your phone for directions, you can choose the little icon of the man holding his hand up to see pricing and availability from Uber and Lyft! I swear I saw the option on Google Maps before, but it’s missing now. Sorry, Android friends!

Use These Browser Keyboard Shortcuts

Re-Open Tabs You Accidentally Closed

Ever accidentally close a browser tab you needed? It can set you back seconds or minutes or hours. Hold down the Control button (PC) or Command button (Mac) plus SHIFT and “T” to re-open a tab you closed accidentally! And if you accidentally close your whole browser with all the tabs, that shortcut will bring them all back in the new window.

Clear Your Cache on Just One Page

Sometimes your IT department tells you to “clear your cache” to fix a website problem. But that can log you out of sites, and you can’t remember your passwords!

Hit the Control button (PC) or Command button (Mac) plus SHIFT and “R” to clear the cache on just that one page.
