March Mammal Madness: The Only Sports Bracket for Nerds Like Us

I don’t do sports. I don’t work out. I don’t watch games. The closest I get to “athletic” is wearing yoga pants while sitting at my desk. But this? This is a sports event I can get behind.

March Mammal Madness (MMM) is like March Madness, but for nerds. Instead of basketball teams, real animals go head-to-head in scientifically researched battles based on their actual behaviors, habitats, and strengths.

The battles are determined by real research on each animal’s size, strength, agility, defense mechanisms, and actual behaviors in the wild.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Matchups Are Set – Animals are ranked and paired based on their characteristics and the tournament theme.
  2. Battles Are Simulated – Scientists and experts analyze how these creatures would interact in a real-world encounter.
  3. Probability Plays a Role – Just like in real life, the stronger or more dominant animal usually wins, but upsets happen. An underdog (or under-mammal?) might escape, outwit, or even scare off a bigger opponent.
  4. Results Are Updated Weekly – Just like we have to wait for the b’ball folks to finish each game, the weekly results come in on the main page, complete with dramatic narration and scientific facts.

Y’all, this is a real thing. There’s even a trailer (below) and a Spotify Playlist. And, of course, a Facebook Page.

I learned about March Mammal Madness from my amazing science teacher sister. She set up a bracket for my family so we can battle out important questions like can a honey badger take down a wolverine? Will a pangolin outmaneuver a giant otter?

It’s fun, it’s educational, and it’s the only competition where you can shout, “I KNEW THE QUOKKA WOULD DOMINATE!” and feel like an absolute champion.
