Welcome to the AI revolution! In 2025 and beyond, artificial intelligence (AI) tools are no longer optional — they’re essential. This is Your Nerdy Best Friend's Ultimate AI Toolkit, the tools I use daily to run my business, create my content, keep my followers happy and even make my dinner.
I’ve spent countless hours exploring, testing, and dissecting these tools, and now I’m here to give you the scoop on what works, what doesn’t, and how you can save time, money, and effort by adopting the right ones.
But wait, there's more! Click here to watch the webinar that started it all.
AI Chatbots
ChatGPT
If you haven't tried ChatGPT by now, I just don't know what to say. ChatGPT started it all, and it continues to lead the way. I love free just as much as the next person, but upgrading ChatGPT is some of the best money I spend. For just $20 a month, the Pro plan gives you access to the latest features, like custom instructions, memory and even image generation.
This tool isn’t just for writing blog posts or planning vacations. It’s a brainstorming buddy, a research assistant and a problem solver all in one. Turn on memory to personalize your experience, and let it adapt to your style. The more you use it, the better it gets. Trust me, paying for the Pro version will be the best $20 you spend this year.
Pro Tip: Make sure to customize your instructions and turn memory on to get a personalized experience.
Claude
Anthropic is an OpenAI competitor that is known for a commitment to ethical AI development. It’s supposed to be trained on content that has the creators’ permissions and is supposed to have tighter controls on questionable output. Believe it or not, it’s also free for basic use with a $20 upgrade. I didn’t find it better than ChatGPT, so I don’t pay for it anymore. But many people love it.
Integrated AI Tools
A problem with ChatGPT and Claude at this time is that they are external tools vs. one embedded in the apps you probably use every day. Microsoft and Google are leading the way here (but they have a long way to go). Apple's bringing up the rear.
Microsoft Copilot
Imagine having AI baked right into your favorite Microsoft apps. That’s what Copilot delivers. For $20/month (personal) or $30/month (enterprise), you get a powerful tool that works seamlessly within Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. It’s not as robust as standalone tools like ChatGPT, but its integration makes it helpful for Microsoft users who don't want to venture outside their infrastructure.
Google Gemini
Similarly, Google’s AI, Gemini, is integrated into Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Gmail. While it’s still catching up to its competitors, its seamless integration with the Google ecosystem makes it a no-brainer for Workspace users. I'm giving the newest upgrade a try now (and paying $20/month for the privilege).
Apple Intelligence
For those in the Apple ecosystem, Apple Intelligence is worth exploring. This emerging AI feature is integrated into Apple devices, enhancing apps like Messages and Photos. While it’s not as advanced as tools like ChatGPT, it’s free and seamlessly integrated for users of the latest Apple devices. It’s especially handy for quick, on-the-go tasks like dictation or organizing media.
Bonus: Canva
Most people think of Canva as a design tool, but the company is actively working on being a replacement for Microsoft Office. With the paid version, you have AI tools embedded throughout, such as document design, presentation development, AI images, AI video clips and even AI music. And every year Canva adds more and more features. It's hard to keep up with all the new goodies.
AI Note-Taking
I think the rise of AI note-taking tools has transformed the way I work more than almost any AI tool. Instead of scrambling to take notes during a meeting, I can maintain eye contact with my teammates and get a detailed outline, transcription, summary and action items later. I feel confident that I'll capture and be able to retrieve every salient point.
Otter.ai
Meetings, webinars, brainstorming sessions—Otter.ai is your go-to for transcription. The free version is a great start, but upgrading unlocks advanced features like summaries and keyword highlights. While it’s not perfect (the transcription is sometimes so bad it makes me roll my eyes), it’s a game-changer for keeping track of your thoughts and conversations.
Fireflies.ai
Fireflies is a fantastic alternative, particularly for teams. It records, transcribes, and summarizes meetings across platforms. The free version is solid, but the Pro plan at $10/month adds advanced features that are worth every penny.
Zoom AI Companion
Zoom's AI Companion is a noteworthy addition to virtual meetings. Integrated into all Zoom's paid plans, this tool provides live transcription, meeting summaries and automated action items. While not nearly as robust as Otter.ai or Fireflies.ai in terms of being able to "chat" with your transcripts and gain custom answers, its seamless integration into the platform makes it an excellent choice for regular Zoom-ers.
Photos and Graphics
Canva
Canva is more than a design tool; it’s a creative powerhouse. For $12.99/month, you get access to AI tools for image creation, text-to-video generation, and even document drafting. Whether you’re making social media posts or full-blown presentations, Canva’s intuitive interface and robust feature set make it an essential tool for creators.
Recraft.AI
Looking for hyper-realistic images? Recraft.AI excels in creating high-quality visuals with consistent styling. It’s not as user-friendly as Canva, but its results are worth the effort. I have never seen better generated images from other sources, and it even works well with spelling words and keeping the right number of fingers on hands.
MidJourney
If you’re aiming for top-tier artistic and photorealistic image generation, MidJourney is the one to beat. According to people with talent, Midjourney consistently delivers stunning results—if you know how to prompt it correctly. For me, the challenge has been crafting prompts that get exactly what I want, so that's why I prefer more simple tools such as ChatGPT or Meta.ai.
Meta.ai
I’m not a very good prompt wizard, and that’s why I love Meta’s image creation options better than others. With most, you put in a prompt and wait to see if you and AI are aligned in your vision. Meta lets you fire up the AI image creation tool with the word “imagine” in its general prompt box. Then it creates the image in real time as you type, so you can modify the prompt as you go. It’s fun for hours. And right now it’s free.
Envato Elements
Sometimes it’s just easier to find the perfect image than to create it yourself. That’s where Envato Elements shines. With a subscription starting at just $16.50/month, you get access to millions of stock images, videos, templates and other creative assets. It’s perfect for those moments when you need high-quality visuals quickly and don’t have the time (or patience) to generate them from scratch.
Videos
If you've ever tried to create and edit video, you know what a huge time suck this could be. Before I found these AI tools, I could easily spend more than one hour of time for every minute of final video that I produced. Professional video editors do it much better of course, but there's a reason the good ones can charge a pretty penny.
Descript
When I found Descript, my life was changed forever. This tool lets you edit video by editing the words on a transcript rather than scrubbing through a video second by second trying to find a way to cut out that "umm." And the AI tools they've integrated are phenomenal, from one-button studio sound adjustments to automatic speaker spotlighting to even creating a blog post straight from your video. Plus they add more features all the time. Plans start at $12/month, and the time you’ll save makes it worth every penny.
ChatGPT Sora
This falls under the category of "surprise and delight." I have had so much fun uploading old photos and animating them. I added confetti and party balloons to a static picture of me and a client, animated a photo of me and Granddaddy to make us hug and even had Matthew McConaughey show up to greet a speaker friend of mine in one of her headshots.
(Umm, yeah. It's capable of flagrant copyright violations. But #MatthewMcConaughey.)
Try it for free or upgrade like I did because you want to make a thousand of these.
InVideo
If you’re not a video editing pro, InVideo’s AI tools make creating professional-looking videos as easy as typing. Just drop in your text, and this tool transforms it into polished video content complete with stock footage and animations. It’s also loaded with AI features for automatic scene selection, script generation, and even voiceovers. Starting at $25/month, it’s ideal for marketers and small businesses looking to elevate their content.
Lumen5
Lumen5 is another fantastic tool that turns blogs and written content into engaging videos. With intuitive templates and AI assistance, it’s perfect for quick video production. The free version is great to start with, but upgrading unlocks more features for high-quality content creation.
AI Audio Tools
Audio tools fall into two categories in my world: "surprise and delight" and "#helpfulbutcreepy."
You can clone your voice, create your own music, design custom sound effects and even produce your own instant podcasts. This is serious mind-blowing stuff.
Suno.com
Suno is my favorite tool for quickly generating custom songs. Whether you need a birthday song for your boss or theme music for your next big event, Suno delivers results in seconds. Just describe what you want, and it'll create lyrics, instrumentals, vocals, duets, big band sounds, jazz scats... anything you want. I immediately upgraded to be able to create way more songs than I need because it's just that fun.
Udio
I like Suno best, but people who know music think Udio sets the standard for AI music generation, creating high-fidelity tracks from simple text prompts. I use the free plan and find it just fine for producing the occasional ditty.
ElevenLabs
Now for the #helpfulbutcreepy stuff. ElevenLabs's groundbreaking voice cloning and natural text-to-speech capabilities should give us all pause about the future of deepfakes. You can create lifelike voiceovers that sound professional and engaging. Whether you’re narrating videos, producing podcasts or trying to prank (or scam!) family members, ElevenLabs makes it way too easy. Plans start at $5/month.
NotebookLM
When Google released NotebookLM in the fall of 2024, all the nerdy techies like me went WHOA! It was created to help students organize notes and study, but the wow factor came with the ability to create a podcast from any article, paper, text or other source. In about five minutes, you get a stupifyingly realistic "conversation" between two AI-generated voices who discuss the topic as if they were on a podcast. It blows me away.
Currently available for free in beta, the podcast characters it creates are the same every time, and you don't have options to personalize. But it has opened the door to all kinds of crazy innovation.
AI Search Engines
Friends, I hate to tell you, but the beloved Google of our childhoods may be disappearing forever. AI search engines are replacing the search-and-click-click-click method of online research into a one-stop instant Wikipédia page of results that you can query and refine.
Perplexity AI
The proven winner in this category is Perplexity AI. Write a query and watch it search the web by itself to synthesize the findings from the top sources. A free version may work fine for most, but for $20/month, you get multi-step queries without having to ask more questions. Perplexity provides direct links to its sources, making it invaluable for research-heavy tasks.
BONUS! If you have Verizon, you get Perplexity Pro for free for a year for you and some friends!
The Also Rans
ChatGPT AI Search
ChatGPT has taken its conversational prowess to the web with its AI-powered search feature. I did extensive testing when they released the capability, and initially it gives you well-sourced responses. The problem is that when you ask follow up questions, ChatGPT can do what ChatGPT does best -- makes up crap that just isn't true.
Google Search Labs
Google Search Labs is Google’s experimental AI search feature and its attempt to read the writing on the wall when it comes to the fundamental shift in the way we search.
Enable it via Search Labs to get AI-generated summaries, key insights and follow-up questions directly integrated into your search results. It's free for now but requires opting into the beta program.
